Pollution affects all of us and all countries.
That's why it's important that the EU countries work together to solve environmental problems.
For these reasons the EU has been developing a series of "Environmental Action Programmes".
Pollution means the destruction of the purity of the environment. The principal effects of atmospheric pollution are:
1)Ozone depletion
2)Greenhouse effect
3)Acid rain.
This ozone layer is becoming thinner and thinner.
The thinning of this layer causes an increase in UV rays, which bring about skin cancer, damage to the photosynthesis of plants and a decrease in crops.
The greenhouse effect is a phenomenon by which the gases in the atmosphere trap the heat from the sun; thus, the atmosphere acts like a greenhouse for the heart. Pollution by acid rain in caused by smoke and fumes from burning coal, petrol and oil, which are carried by the wind for miles and miles.
Acid rain destroys the rain forests, causes the acidification of lakes and rivers, and kills living things.
